What Is a DOT Physical?
A DOT physical is a medical examination used to determine whether a commercial driver meets the physical qualification standards required for operating a commercial motor vehicle.
The examination must be performed by a medical examiner listed on the FMCSA National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.
The examination evaluates several areas of health that may affect a driver’s ability to safely operate a commercial vehicle.
What Does a DOT Physical Include?
- Review of your medical history
- Review of current medications
- Blood pressure and pulse
- Vision screening
- Hearing screening
- Physical examination
- Neurological and musculoskeletal assessment
- Urinalysis as required by the DOT examination
The urinalysis performed as part of a standard DOT physical is used to evaluate certain health indicators. It is not the same as an employer-required drug test.
What Should I Bring?
- A valid photo ID
- A current list of medications, including dosage
- Glasses or contact lenses if you use them for driving
- Hearing aids if applicable
- Information regarding significant medical conditions
- Any applicable medical exemption or variance documentation
- Relevant information from your treating provider when required for an existing medical condition

DOT Medical Certification
After the examination, the medical examiner determines whether you meet the applicable FMCSA medical qualification standards.
Depending on the examination findings and applicable federal requirements, a driver may qualify for a Medical Examiner’s Certificate for up to the maximum certification period or may require a shorter certification period and follow-up monitoring.
In some circumstances, additional medical information or evaluation may be needed before a certification decision can be made.
What to Expect
When you arrive, you will complete or review the required medical history information. The certified medical examiner will then perform the required components of the DOT physical and review any relevant medical documentation.
After the examination, we will discuss the findings with you and explain whether additional information is needed.
Drivers who meet the applicable FMCSA medical standards will receive the appropriate medical certification documentation.
