Activator Method in Smithfield

Activator Method in Smithfield

At Smithfield Chiropractic, we understand that not every patient is comfortable with traditional hands-on adjustments. The Activator Method provides another option using a small handheld instrument to deliver a quick, controlled impulse to a specific joint.

Because the technique uses very little force and does not require the twisting or turning commonly associated with some manual adjustments, many patients find it comfortable and easy to tolerate.

What Is the Activator Method?

The Activator Method uses a handheld chiropractic adjusting instrument to apply a quick, low-force impulse to targeted areas of the spine or extremities. Your chiropractor determines where treatment may be appropriate based on your examination, symptoms, joint motion, and individual needs.

The instrument allows the chiropractor to treat a very specific area while using considerably less force than many traditional hands-on adjusting techniques.

Benefits of the Activator Method

  • Gentle, Low-Force Approach: Requires minimal force and little twisting or rotation.
  • Targeted Treatment: Allows the chiropractor to address specific joints or areas of restricted movement.
  • No Traditional “Popping”: A good option for patients who prefer an adjustment without the popping or cracking commonly associated with manual techniques.
  • Adaptable to the Patient: The amount and location of treatment can be tailored to the patient’s condition, comfort level, and treatment goals.

When We May Use the Activator Method

  • Neck or back pain and stiffness
  • Restricted spinal or joint movement
  • Muscle tension associated with joint dysfunction
  • Certain extremity joint complaints
  • Discomfort following everyday strains or injuries
  • A preference for a gentler chiropractic adjusting technique

Activator adjustments may be used on their own or alongside other chiropractic techniques depending on your individual treatment plan.

What to Expect

During treatment, your chiropractor will evaluate the areas involved and determine whether the Activator Method is appropriate for you. The instrument is positioned over a specific joint and delivers a quick impulse that typically feels like a light tap.

There is usually no twisting or popping sensation. Treatment is tailored to your examination findings, comfort level, and response to care.
